How far behind are open models?

Open models, AI models where you can download the weights online, are generally not as capable as the best closed models (models only available through an API), but how large is the gap, and how does it change over time? We try to answer this question by using data from 17 selected benchmarks (8 private, 9 public, ~110 datapoints) measuring various capabilities.
